For over fifteen years now, Worker Power Institute (formerly CASE) has led the fight for economic justice and a better standard of living for working families by conducting advocacy campaigns for better jobs, equitable economic development, and increasing civic participation. In partnership with the Grand Canyon Institute, Worker Power Institute surveyed hundreds of hospitality workers in Phoenix. The findings were grim: over 60% of airport concession workers suffer from food insecurity and about 40% have high or extremely high food insecurity levels; while all workers are struggling, data showed Black workers are particularly impacted. Black workers are much more likely to be in the lowest income category for workers at the airport. 80% of Black workers make less than $800/week, compared to 40% of white workers.
Worker Power Institute began holding weekly food distributions for airport workers in September 2023 and started a Hardship Fund to support struggling hospitality workers. You can donate to the fund HERE.
